ANGLING REPORT
Herewith the latest reports from around the country.
NORTH COAST
We are in the throws are spring and some good catches of Kob, Garrick and Geelbek have been made from Durban all the way up to Richards Bay. The Garrick have been taken on live shad and when they have been missing other live baits like mullet and Karenteen have worked well from the shore. Craig reported that Boat anglers are enjoying good catches all round with the Geelbek and Kob making up the majority of the catch. The weather has been playing the game nicely even though we have had 3 small cold fronts in the last two weeks. LBSA anglers will be interested to hear that a few decent sized Sandsharks have made an appearance on the Nonoti stretch even though the water has been between 19 and 21 degrees.
SOUTH COAST
News from Dean on the South Coast is that the fish seem to have followed the Sardines and both are nowhere to be seen. This year’s Sardine run has eluded us once again with a bulk of the catches coming out on the Durban beaches. Boat anglers have been heavily “taxed” by some huge sharks and have found it extremely difficult in landing any quality fish. The LBSA guys have caught some nice Bronze Bream and Shad. (Shad anglers please remember the 4 per person catch limit). Splash Rock has produced some small Garrick on live shad. Hopefully the Sardine Run hangover ends soon so that catches can return to normal.
TRANSKEI
Ray reported that Trankei anglers have been really fortunate as the deep water points have been producing some big sharks. Big slide baits have worked best for these toothy critters. The offshore angling has been superb with some giant Coppers being landed in the Hole in the Wall area. The Yellowtail have also been “busting” the guys tackle and leaving anglers with seriously sore backs. There have been reports of some good sized Pig-nosed Grunter in the Mazeppa area. It is good to see these beautiful fish making an appearance as their stocks are in danger of being depleted.
CAPE TOWN
The Western Cape has been a bit quiet with the boat angling being the most successful. The following is a report from one of our members:
Andro”.
Let’s hope the Bronzies do start soon and that the favourable South Easter blows for a few days.
